Artist Bio : Jeff Kamberos
Jeff Kamberos continues to pay homage to popular culture. Every painting is a performance, the actors being the artist's beloved musicians, media celebrities, and cartoon characters. They are personal and public icons, usually immediately recognizable, and always flatly placed together in an imaginary space to create their own order. Intensely colored and detailed, the paintings have candy-bright palettes and stunningly smooth surfaces. Kamberos cites influence from such master painters as Vermeer and Van Eyck, and applies their canon of traditional techniques to his appropriated images of comic book heroes and commercial products. This kind of meticulous care for the modern mundane is unusual, and is readily apparent in his flawless canvases. He brings seriousness to a subject that is usually not taken seriously; it is pop culture without frivolity. Although each of the figures is obviously loved and appreciated, they are oftentimes oblivious of one another, blindly existing together in a confusing and tumultuous space. They seem to be a reflection of both personal and cultural confusion, each piece lively, idiosyncratic, and artistically honest. Jeff Kamberos loves music and painting; he loves life and the philosophy of life. Most of all he paints that late night stuff-he's a nocturnal character and comes really alive when he's on that blues/jazz train. The beat comes through - in his painting, his subjects - that's the love of this irreverent, not-to-miss artist, Jeff Kamberos.
